Most often, suffering people will generalize a symptom as if it is the only feeling they are able to recognize in themselves. They’ll say things like, “I am always depressed” or “I have permanent pain” or “I am always afraid of everything.” One way to deal with such statements is via the meta-model, but for feelings that seem to take over the mental map, there is a simpler and faster way. With one question, we can reduce the scope of the negative emotion’s existence within the current mental map of the client. The formula for implementing an evidence challenge is: not + timeframe. For example, “At what times is the pain not felt?”, “When are you sure depression is not there?”, “You cannot be afraid while watching your favorite TV show, are you not?”, “When are you certain the pain is forgotten?”
