TOTE is at the basis of any NLP intervention. Test, Operate, Test, Exit—this is actually the antidote to the fear of failure. We can install this approach in our clients linguistically: “What would you do if you knew that no matter what happened, you simply could not fail?” Then we chunk down their replies into intermediary action steps, as they’re most likely going to give answers like “I would start my own business” or “I would ask my boss for a raise”, etc. Then we can reinforce it by asking, “How would your perception of this desired outcome change if you knew you had to do this one action 100 times in a row, but you would definitely succeed when you get to 100?“Once they realize that failure only exists if they say so, we can teach them the presupposition “there is no failure, only feedback” and improve upon it by asking “and what would you do, say, and feel if you knew that it was perfectly OK to fail 99 times out of 100?”.
