Learning to be in tune with your body begins with mastering the art of centering. It’s common for people to ground themselves by connecting with the earth’s gravity, which keeps us firmly planted on the ground. Practicing groundwork will help you establish a connection with your physical, mental, and emotional self, allowing you to peacefully occupy your physical body.
Step 1: Begin by transferring your weight between your feet. #
Step 2: Imagine the soles of your feet as if they were the suction cups on a lizard’s feet, securing you firmly to the ground yet still allowing you to move. #
Step 3: While you inhale, gently press one or both legs into the ground. #
Step 4: As you exhale, let go of any stress you may have held in your body. #
Step 5: Anchor the kinesthetic stimulus in your foot to the sensation of letting go. #
Step 6: Determine what further tension you can let go of without compromising your ability to hold yourself upright. #
Fire the anchor.
Step 7: Try it the other way around now. #
Breathe in and feel the flow of breath into your body, then while exhaling out, gently press into the floor with one or both feet.
Step 8: Test. #
