The Progression of Mastery #

The hierarchy of learning consists of five distinct stages:

  • Unconscious Incompetence: You lack competence in a specific skill and remain unaware of your lack of ability. At this stage, you do not yet recognize the skill’s significance.
  • Conscious Incompetence: You recognize your lack of skill or knowledge. You acknowledge the need to learn and improve in this specific area.
  • Conscious Competence: You possess the necessary skills and knowledge, but you must consciously focus and apply your abilities to perform successfully. This stage necessitates effort and concentration.
  • Unconscious Competence: You have practiced the skill so much that it becomes automatic and requires little conscious effort. You perform the skill habitually without thinking about it.
  • Mastery: This represents the highest level of learning. You perform effortlessly and adapt or improvise creatively beyond the fundamentals.
