  1. Test: The first step is to determine whether you have achieved your desired result or goal. This is the initial evaluation to see if the desired outcome was obtained.

  2. Operate: If the desired outcome is not obtained during the testing phase, the next step is to take action, or “operate,” in some way to achieve the desired outcome. This action could include making decisions, changing behaviors, or implementing different strategies to get closer to the goal.

  3. Test: Following the operation to effect the change, the process is repeated with another test phase. This is done to determine whether the previous step’s action produced the desired result.

  4. Exit: If the test results show that the desired outcome was achieved, the client stops attempting to achieve the goal and “exits” the cycle. This means that the process has come to an end because the desired result has been obtained.

The T.O.T.E. model is a fundamental pillar for comprehending and developing more complex strategies. It enables the systematic and organized analysis and representation of various behavioral patterns. Each T.O.T.E. strategy is referred to as a “Tote” in NLP.

In the Test phase, you will assess the current situation and compare it to the desired outcome or goal. It entails assessing the current situation and determining whether any action is required. NLP emphasizes the importance of flexibility and resourcefulness during this stage, encouraging clients to modify their strategies if they are not producing the desired results. The Operate phase entails actively problem-solving, making necessary changes, and utilizing various NLP techniques to facilitate change.

The second Test phase allows for feedback and evaluation after putting the chosen strategies and actions into action. In this phase, the actual results are compared to the desired results established in the first Test phase. People can analyze the results to see if they are getting closer to their goal or if more changes are required. This phase’s feedback is extremely useful for refining the approach and ensuring progress toward the desired outcome.

The Exit phase denotes the completion of the goal-directed behavior. It entails determining whether the desired outcome was obtained or whether more iterations of the Test-Operate-Test loop are required. Recognizing accomplishments, celebrating success, and reflecting on lessons learned throughout the process are all part of this stage. During the Exit phase, clients can also incorporate their new learning and insights from the experience into their future behaviors and goal-setting.

The TOTE model is more than a linear process in NLP; it is a continuous loop that allows for continuous refinement and adaptation. It emphasizes the value of adaptability, feedback, and continuous learning. People can use the TOTE model to aid in personal development, problem solving, and achieving professional objectives.

People can have multiple totes running at the same time, each addressing a different goal or task. A person, for example, may have a Tote for making decisions, another Tote for dealing with emotions, and so on. The T.O.T.E. model is an effective tool for modeling successful behavior and comprehending the underlying processes that lead to goal achievement.

Totes can be applied to all levels of human functioning, from complex decision-making to the most fundamental physiological processes. For example, homeostasis, in which physiological systems work to maintain internal stability, can be viewed as a type of T.O.T.E. in action, as the body constantly tests and operates to regulate various bodily functions.
