This refers to the use of sentences or phrases in which the function or meaning of a word cannot be determined immediately from context. This causes confusion and uncertainty, prompting the listener to use cognitive processes to interpret the intended meaning.

By using verb plus “-ing” constructions like “running water” or “shooting stars,” the therapist creates sentences that are unclear as to whether the “-ing” word is an adjective or a verb.

This syntax ambiguity disrupts the conscious mind’s logical processing, making the unconscious mind more receptive to suggestion and open to new interpretations.

Syntactic ambiguities can be used in therapy to induce a trance-like state and encourage the client’s flexible thinking and exploration of alternative viewpoints.
