Erickson used Analogue Marking to emphasize specific words or phrases that he wanted to impact the unconscious mind. He would highlight these words and phrases by changing tonality, capturing the listener’s unconscious mind’s attention and focus.

To use analogue marking effectively, one must lower their tone and increase the volume of their voice while delivering the marked-out words.

This technique distinguishes and emphasizes the significance of those specific words, making them stand out and resonate with the unconscious mind.

When working with a client, for example, you can use analogue marking by emphasizing the words “relax deeply now” to guide them into a state of deep relaxation. The highlighted words have a powerful effect on the unconscious mind, facilitating the desired therapeutic outcome.
