This exercise is intended to relieve the weight and frustration that can result from having a long list of desires that seem out of reach.

We may believe that we are incapable of achieving certain goals or becoming a certain person, which can lead to feelings of limitation and disappointment. This exercise promotes a shift in perspective by exploring alternative paths to achieving our goals.

We acknowledge our longing and what we believe would bring us joy or fulfillment by beginning with the statement “If only I could…” and then expressing a desire. The exercise, however, does not end there.

It encourages us to question our assumptions and investigate the possibility of achieving the desired feeling or experience through alternative means. “But what if I could still get [the desired feeling or experience] without having to do [the thing]?” asks the follow-up.

opens up new possibilities for creative thinking and reframing. It encourages us to challenge our limiting beliefs and consider alternative approaches that can lead to the same desired result.

By shifting the focus from a narrow path to a broader perspective, the exercise helps to relieve the heaviness of unfulfilled wishes. It encourages us to think outside the box and to investigate new possibilities that are within our grasp.

By broadening our options, we open ourselves up to new experiences and methods of achieving the desired feelings. We gain a sense of empowerment and hope by brainstorming various ideas and reflecting on their alignment with our values and circumstances.

We begin to recognize that we have the ability to create fulfillment and satisfaction in our lives, even if it differs from our initial expectations.

Taking action on the alternative paths identified in the exercise allows us to progress and turn our wishes into tangible experiences. It alleviates the burden of feeling stuck and encourages us to adopt a more proactive and resourceful mindset.
