Secondary gains are the unspoken or subconscious benefits or advantages that people derive from engaging in certain behaviors, even if those behaviors appear to be undesirable or counterproductive on the surface.
These rewards can be emotional, social, psychological, or even physiological in nature, and they serve to reinforce and perpetuate the behavior.
Secondary gains provide a sense of satisfaction, relief, or fulfillment of certain needs, and thus serve as motivations or incentives for clients to continue engaging in the behavior.
It is critical to identify and comprehend these secondary gains in order to effectively address and modify behaviors, as ignoring or dismissing them can stymie long-term behavioral change.
